ACTIVITY!
z
Statistics - is a scientific body of
knowledge which deals with the
collection, organization,
presentation, interpretation, and
analysis of data.
Introduction to Statistics.
INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS.pptx Grade-7 Slides
z
Data
- a set of information or
observations under study. Data
gathered from a population or a
sample. Data may be classified as
quantitative or qualitative
z
Qualitative - are data which can
assume values that manifest the
concept of attributes.
- can be taken on non-numerical
values such as name of colors,
labels and others. ( Categorical )
Example
Flavor of ice cream
Sizes of t-shirt ( large, medium, small )
z
Quantitative - are data which
are numerical in nature. (
Numerical )
Example
1. Hours of sleep
2. Number of students in Don Carlos
Ledesma National High School.
INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS.pptx Grade-7 Slides
z
Variable
- it is a characteristics of a population or a
sample which makes the members
different from each other.
- variables can be discrete or continuous..
z
Discrete variable
- is a variable whose values are
obtained through the process of
counting. ( Counted )
Example
Number of chairs in the classroom
The number of teachers in the school
The number of pots in the hallway.
z
Continuous variable –
is a variable that can be obtained
through the process of measuring.
( Measured )
Example
Weight
Height
The distance between your house and
school.
INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS.pptx Grade-7 Slides
z
1. What is statistics?
2. What is the difference between
qualitative and quantitative data?
3. How do you differentiate discrete and
continuous variable?
ANALYSIS
z
Abstraction
Statistics - is a scientific body of knowledge which
deals with the collection, organization, presentation,
interpretation, and analysis of data.
Qualitative - are data which can assume values
that manifest the concept of attributes.
- can be taken on non-numerical values such as
name of colors, labels and others.
Quantitative - are data which are numerical in
nature.
Qualitative is categorical while Quantitative is
numerical.
z
Discrete variable - is a variable whose values
are obtained through the process of counting.
Continuous variable - is a variable that can
be obtained through the process of measuring.
Discrete variable is counted while Continuous
variable is measured.
z Application
Classify each of the following data as quantitative or
qualitative kind of data.
ļ‚§ Age of students
ļ‚§ Color of the eye
ļ‚§ Number of computers in the school
ļ‚§ School logo
ļ‚§ Score in the entrance examination
z
Identify each of the following as discrete or continuous
variable.
ļ‚§ Number of mangoes harvested
ļ‚§ Height of a building
ļ‚§ Area of a circle
ļ‚§ Number of guests in a wedding
ļ‚§ Dimension of a white board
z
EVALUATION
I. Direction: Determine whether the given data is a
QUALITATIVE or QUANTITATIVE.
1.Color of a car
2.The time it takes to cut a lawn
3.Marital status of faculty members in a university
II. Classify the following data as continuous or discrete.
4.The mean weight of pennies currently being minted is 2.5
grams.
5.The number of costumers at a drive thru each hour.
z
ASSIGNMENT
Have an advance study/ research
about gathering statistical data.
